With the convenience of car hire services, visitors have the freedom to roam about the region and make the most of a Byron Bay vacay.
Byron Bay Beaches
With brilliant white sandy coastline bordering crystal clear turquoise blue water, the bay beaches offer scenic beauty and the optimal playground for any number of water sports ranging from swimming, kayaking and snorkelling to scuba diving and surfing. Unlike many coastal locations, Byron Bay lacks the typical overcrowded touristy environment clad with one resort after another. Drive your car hire to Cape Byron, stroll up to the lighthouse, and witness spectacular views of Mt. Warning, the Border Ranges and Broken Head. Along this area, guests have the chance to venture into the rainforest, or enjoy whale watching in July and again in September and October.
The Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens
When in need of some place that provides a sense of peace and tranquillity, head to the Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens in Byron’s picturesque hinterland. The Buddhist themed destination serves as a Kalachakra World Peace Sputa and was awarded a blessing from none other than the Dalai Lama himself. Enjoy a walk along paths lined with hand carved statues and rose quartz. Take in the fresh air of the gardens and rainforest. Explore the ancient labyrinth. Have a beverage or snack at the Lotus Cafe and gaze in awe at the scenery. The site also offers healing baths, places for meditation, a children’s playground and a gift shop.
National Parks
The many parks and reserves in the area provide the perfect locations for exploring local nature and wildlife. Mount Warning spans 2,380 hectares and features an ancient volcano. Venture through the rainforest terrain to the 1,100 metre summit and receive the reward of panoramic views over Tweed Valley. Among the 8,080 hectares of Nightcap National Park stand the impressive 100 metre Minyon Falls. Besides trekking, the park remains popular for camping and picnicking. Indulge in a hot air balloon ride, learn hang-gliding, or explore the area by mountain bike. Take a boat ride to the Julian Rocks Marine Reserve, go snorkelling or scuba diving and experience the fascinating and abundant marine life that includes over 500 species of fish.
Shopping
Byron Bay gained recognition as an arts and crafts community as many turned hobbies into full-time businesses. Journey to the myriad of galleries and shops to find everything from fine art to glass blown creations and more. Enjoy home-made cookies or chips and visit the hat and surfboard makers that line the streets of the community. The local Handimarket stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week whether you have a craving for fresh produce or are in need of toiletries.
