Music has a way of soothing me in whatever time of day, especially so if the lyrics are uplifting and based on the inspiration of God’s Word (praise and worship music). It can also help one learn another language better, thanks to the lyrics that come with it. When I was learning to speak Thai, I soon realized that listening to Thai music helped me expand my Thai vocabulary π
For me, listening to music from other languages also serves as a reminder of the multitude of languages in the world today. The world is not monolingual, speaking only my native language (Bisaya or Cebuano) or English which is often heard, spoken or read about second only to my country’s (the Philippines) national language. That is why I treasure my small CD collection of Thai, Indonesian and Finnish music — gifts from friends who were happy to learn of my interest in Β music from other languages, cultures. As I’ve said, there’s a huge world out there and they are not just speaking one language or living in the same culture as I do, having the same challenges and opportunities as I have. In fact, there are about 6, 900 languages in the world today, according to Joshua Project. I think it’s good for us all to remember that so that we have a bigger view of life, of living. And in my case, listening to music from different countries, cultures has helped a lot.
